1. Q: I don't know what disc to buy. How do I choose the correct one?

A: The descriptions on the website give a very good summary of what is in each product. The 5.0 materials have integrated video lectures to help you understand the material, plus you can get step-by-step solutions to all of the problems. All of the textbooks can be ordered on either CD or DVD disc. If you have a DVD ROM on your computer, I would recommend the DVD version. All of the material usually fits on one or two DVD(s) but takes 5 to 11 CDs.

The Beginning Algebra 5.0 starts with a little arithmetic and then goes into algebra. No prior understanding of algebra is required or assumed. This is the fifth edition of the material. The course title is usually Algebra I, Beginning Algebra, or Elementary Algebra.

Intermediate Algebra 5.0 assumes that you have successfully completed one year of high school algebra.

Several million students nationwide have used the previous printed editions. There is a list of over 250 teachers that helped in the development of the material. http://getmath.com/contributors.html

2. Q: I need your help. I have never had algebra and I don't know where to begin. My class starts tomorrow. I thought I would do better in class if I had something to start on at home. I don't even know the basics of algebra and I don't even know what to order or where to start. Do you have any suggestions?

A: The Beginning Algebra 5.0 starts with a little arithmetic and then goes into algebra. No prior understanding of algebra is required or assumed.

There are prealgebra books that are a bridge between algebra and arithmetic. If you are in algebra 1, the material you will be learning is not prealgebra, but getting a supplemental prealgebra textbook might be of use. We do not have any prealgebra material.

You can go to  TotallyFreeMath.com  and download an entire beginning algebra book for free. There are 1,000 examples and 6,000 problems. That might be all you need. As time and resources allow, all of my book will be available for free. We are keeping the prices low on the products at GetMath, but the profits from that site will fund the free site. You might pass on the free site to your teacher and fellow students.

Before purchasing anything, you should compare our table of contents to the table of contents in your book to see if the material is the same. We want you to be happy with your purchase, but as with any type of software, once it is opened, it cannot be returned.

You might consider some of the supplemental materials if you order our Beginning Algebra 5.0. The student's solutions manual and the instructor's solutions manual show step-by-step solutions to the problems. The solution's manuals are different in the level of information they provide. You might find both of them useful.

The instructor's resource manual provides information that a teacher would use along with quizzes and tests. There are multiple-choice tests as well as the usual find-the-answer tests, all with answer keys. The annotated instructor's edition of the textbook is what a teacher would use. It has teaching tips and the answer next to every problem. If money is not an issue, I am sure there would be some benefit in purchasing them. They would allow you to test yourself, but there are tests and commutative tests at the end of every chapter in the Beginning Algebra 5.0 book.

I hope this helps with your decision. Studies have shown that 95% of students can learn mathematics through precalculus. It is unlikely that you are in that other 5%. A positive attitude, doing homework every day, and asking questions both inside and outside of class will keep you on track. On the first page of Beginning Algebra 5.0 there is a 12-minutelecture by me on how to study algebra. If you buy the book, make sure you listen to it. If you don't buy the book, there is written material about study skills on the free site. If you have a modem connection, it will take a few minutes to download. I will be adding the audio to it in the future.

3. Q: What is the difference between a textbook and your material?

A: You are buying a disc, which contains the textbook and much more. The advantage of a digital text is the embedded video, linking, and all the extra material that you cannot get in a book.

If you would like a printed version to accompany the disc, you can get the package with the annotated instructor's edition.

4. Q: Do you offer any Math Refresher Courses for adults on CD-ROM?

A: The descriptions on the website give a very good summary of what is in each product. All of the textbooks can be ordered on either CD or DVD disc. If you have a DVD ROM on your computer, I would recommend the DVD version. All of the material usually fits on one or two DVD(s) but takes 5 to 11 CDs.

The following is a little more information to guide your purchase. You will need to look at the table of contents to decide where you need to start.

There are prealgebra books that are a bridge between algebra and arithmetic. If you can do normal arithmetic problems, beginning algebra is the usual starting point. Having a supplemental prealgebra textbook might be of use. We do not have any prealgebra material, but if you go to Amazon, there will be lots of choices. I would recommend the one by McKeague.

You can go to  TotallyFreeMath.com  and download an entire beginning algebra book for free. There are 1,000 examples and 6,000 problems, but no video lectures. You might find both of them useful.

The instructor's resource manual provides information that a teacher would use along with quizzes and tests. There are multiple-choice tests as well as the usual find-the-answer tests, all with answer keys. You would use this to help you keep a normal pace of learning, and it gives you a means to self-test your understanding.

The annotated instructor's edition is what a teacher would use. It has teaching tips and the answer next to every problem. It is a hardbound full-color printed textbook. You can print any of the material on the DVD or CDs, but a printed version does not give you access to the video lectures that appear on every page. The video lectures are the key component to the material, and we have the only textbooks with video lectures integrated directly into the sections, exercise sets, and end of chapter material.

I hope this helps with your decision. A positive attitude, doing homework every day, and asking questions both inside and outside of class will keep you on track. A: The learning system in Solving Algebra Word Problems 5.0 is a combination of both beginning and intermediate algebra word problems. It has a pretest that shows your weak areas before you start learning how to solve word problems.

Beginning Algebra 5.0 is an introductory algebra text. It does not matter whether you are in high school or college. It also covers the algebra that is introduced in grades 6 through 8.

6. Q: What is the total playing time of all the math lectures in Intermediate Algebra 5.0? What is total number of problems and how many pages is the material?

A: The combined run time for the videos is about 13 ½ hours. It will seem like five times that amount because videos that appear in the text material are repeated within the exercise sets. My 13 ½-hour estimate does not count any video more than once. Since the Sony Betacam Masters were reformatted to Windows Media Player, we are able to get that much video on one DVD.

The text has approximately 7,000 problems and is a total of 1,226 pages. The page counts for the ancillaries are - The Instructor's Resource Manual is 371 pages, The Instructor's Solutions Manual is 230 pages, and The Student's Solutions Manual is 354 pages. The total package is 2,181 pages.

7. Q: What is on the Beginning Algebra 5.0 disc and what is in the supplemental material?

A: The Beginning Algebra 5.0 starts with a little arithmetic and then goes into algebra. No prior understanding of algebra is required or assumed. This is the fifth edition of the material. Several million students nationwide have used the previous printed editions. There is a list of over 250 teachers that helped in the development of the material. http://getmath.com/contributors.html

Besides the video lectures, there are thousands of links within the text that take you to the exact place where an example or procedure is that you may want to access as an aid in working a problem or understanding some material.

The student's solutions manual has solutions to every other odd problem and explains them like the examples in the book. The instructor's solutions manual has solutions to every problem, but does not have the little side comments as to what was done in each step. The solution's manuals are different in the level of information they provide. You might find both of them useful.

8. Q: I am in need of a home schooling program that has discs or VHS for my son to watch, he is in 9th grade and in algebra 1. Where I can find this type of program.

A: On the  site, the Beginning Algebra 5.0 is equivalent to the first year of high school algebra. It is a digital textbook with video lectures on every page. If you want only video, then in the HomeSchool Series, you would order the Beginning Algebra Video. These play on you computer, not you television.

9. Q: Can Beginning Algebra 5.0 be used for college?

A: Approximately 1 million students take beginning algebra in college every year. If you have not had algebra, this is where you would start. The beginning algebra text has several supplements. If you feel you are weak in mathematics, you would probably benefit from all of them.

10. Q: What is the total playing time of all the math lectures in Beginning Algebra 5.0? What is total number of problems and how many pages is the material?

A: The combined run time for the videos is about 11 hours. It will seem like five times that amount because videos that appear in the text material are repeated within the exercise sets. My 11-hour estimate does not count any video more than once. Since the Sony Betacam Masters were reformatted to Windows Media Player, we are able to get that much video on one DVD.

The text has approximately 7,000 problems and is a total of 721 pages. The page counts for the ancillaries are - The Instructor's Resource Manual is 330 pages, The Instructor's Solutions Manual is 483 pages, and The Student's Solutions Manual is 253 pages. The total package is 1,787 pages.

11. Q: Would you recommend that I get the full package? I only ask because I don't want to get bogged down with too much information that I may not use.

A: Solutions are important, because an answer just tells you if you are right or wrong. A solution shows you where the mistake occurred. About 10% of the problems in the text have a box around the problem number indicating that the problem has a step-by-step solution in the answer appendix. I designed the text to be all you really need, but the solutions manuals give step-by-step solutions to all of the problems.

There are also chapter tests in the SSM. If you want to be able to test your understanding, you should get the whole package. The instructor's resource manual has 4 tests per chapter and section quizzes. Think in terms of what you wish you had to help you learn the material. Each of the ancillaries is fully described and sample pages are available for viewing.

The farmer across the street has a saying, "better to have it and not use it than need it and not have it". About 90+% of the people that order something, buy the full package. Most people are intimidated by math and having all of the solutions, tests and the teacher's edition will give them a higher level of confidence. Without knowing you personally, I cannot tell you what would be a sufficient package to meet your needs.

12. Q: Do the videos that come with the textbook go chapter-by-chapter teaching each concept?

A: They actually go section-by-section. Every page has one or more lectures, covering each of the specific topics in the section. The section lectures are repeated at the appropriate point in the exercise sets and end-of-chapter materials. The videos were done just for this book, so there is no generic lectures that cover the material differently that the text does.

Besides the video lectures, there are thousands of links within the text that take you to the exact place where an example or procedure is that you may want to access as an aid in working a problem or understanding some material.

13. Q: What is the difference between the CD and the DVD other than one is used on the computer and the other a DVD player? Can you do more with the CD?

A: Both are used on the computer. One goes in the CD drive and the other goes in the DVD-ROM drive. The DVD will not play on a TV DVD player. If it did, probably only the lectures would play and the text would not be visible. If you have a DVD-ROM drive on your computer, I would recommend the DVD version because everything is on one disc.

Both versions are the same. The book is contained on 4 CDs or 1 DVD.

14. Q: Can I print the material?

A: The Beginning or Intermediate Algebra 5.0 discs are complete printable textbooks. It is a digital master, which means you can print it to what ever level you would like (draft, normal, or photo -- full color or black and white). The quality will depend upon your printer, but even a low quality printer will make the material look as good as what is in a textbook.

You can print any page, but in general, you should be working with the material on your computer. What is unique about the 5.0 material are the video lectures on every page and throughout the exercises. Besides the video lectures, there are thousands of links within the text that take you to the exact place where an example or procedure is that you may want to access as an aid in working a problem or understanding some material.

15. Q: Is everything we need on the DVD? Including all the workbook pages and all of the tests?

A: If you order the package with the ancillaries, you get everything that a teacher would have. You will receive tests, solutions to all problems, teaching tip, syllabus, etc. Ancillaries are usually not available to the student. Since I own the publishing company, I decided to make packages that truly paralleled what a classroom teacher has access to. All of the ancillaries are printable. The instructor's Resource Manual has printable tests and quizzes which leave room for you to work the problems. Answer keys are provided.

16. Q: Should I buy the supplemental material?

A: You should consider some of the supplemental materials. If you order our Beginning Algebra 5.0 or Intermediate Algebra 5.0, the student's solutions manual and the instructor's solutions manual show step-by-step solutions to the problems. The student's solutions manual has solutions to every other odd problem and explains them like the examples in the book. The instructor's solutions manual has solutions to every problem, but does not have the little side comments as to what was done in each step. 17. Q: What is the total playing time of all the math lectures in Solving Algebra Word Problems 5.0? What is total number of problems and how many pages is the material?

A: The combined run time for the videos is about 120 minutes. It will seem longer than that because videos that appear in the text material are repeated within the exercise sets. My 120-minute estimate does not count any video more than once. Since the Sony Betacam Masters were reformatted to Windows Media Player, we are able to get that much video on the disc.

There is also about 400 minutes of audio explanation that accompany the solutions to the word problem exercises. Those audios explain the set-by-step solutions, explain some strategies for a particular type of problem, and discuss some alternate ways that the problem could have been solved.

There are approximately 1,300 problems. The total number of pages is 266.

18. Q: Help! My daughter is failing 10th grade math. What should I do?

A: I am not sure what is in your daughter's 10th grade math class. Here are some general things to consider. Beginning Algebra 5.0 starts with a little arithmetic and then goes into algebra. No prior understanding of algebra is required or assumed. Intermediate Algebra 5.0 assumes that you have successfully completed one year of high school algebra.

Before purchasing anything, you should compare our table of contents to the table of contents in her book to see if the material is the same. We want you to be happy with your purchase, but as with any type of software, once it is opened, it cannot be returned.

You might consider some of the supplemental materials if you order our Beginning or Intermediate Algebra 5.0. The student's solutions manual and the instructor's solutions manual show step-by-step solutions to the problems. The solution's manuals are different in the level of information they provide. You might find both of them useful.

The instructor's resource manual provides information that a teacher would use along with quizzes and tests. It has teaching tips and the answer next to every problem. They would allow your daughter to test herself. There are tests and cumulative tests at the end of every chapter in the Beginning and Intermediate Algebra 5.0.

I hope this helps with your decision. Developing a positive attitude, doing homework every day, and asking questions both inside and outside of class will keep her on track. 19. Q: Hi, My son is going to be taking Algebra 2 this year. He is home schooled and wants a curriculum where he can have a teacher showing him how to do the work. He has already had Algebra I from a different curriculum. Will the Intermediate Algebra in this curriculum be what he needs? He would be using this in place of the curriculum he used last year.

A: The intermediate CD has 14 hours of video lectures. It is designed for home schooling. We launched this at a national math convention this fall. It will be licensed to schools that are doing distance learning where the students have little or no contact with the instructor.

20. Q: I am having trouble in intermediate algebra. What should I do?

A: If you are having trouble with intermediate algebra, it is usually because you do not have a good foundation in beginning algebra.

Most schools have a learning resource center where students can go to get help with different subjects. Find out what your school has and take advantage of any free services they provide.

Many students, who experience difficulty in algebra, want to start back with arithmetic. There are usually placement test in the counseling area that will tell you what course to take. You probably do not need an arithmetic course.

The other possibility besides taking beginning algebra would be to take prealgebra. That is a slower paced algebra course and usually covers about half of what is in beginning algebra.

You should probably make an appointment with a counselor and review your situation with someone who can look at your background and help you decide what is the appropriate math class. You will need a good algebra foundation to be able to continue on to other math classes.

I hope this helps with your decision. Studies have shown that 95% of students can learn mathematics through precalculus. It is unlikely that you are in that other 5%. A positive attitude, doing homework every day, and asking questions both inside and outside of class will keep you on track. On the first page of all of the 5.0 discs is a 12-minute lecture by me on how to study algebra. If you buy the disc, make sure you listen to it. If you don't buy the disc, there is written material about study skills on  TotallyFreeMath.com . If you have a modem connection, it will take a few minutes to download. 21. Q: How do I know what section to review before starting to work the word problems on Solving Algebra Word Problems 5.0?

A: Take the pretest at the beginning of the CD. This will show the areas that need work. Once you have mastered the material that the pretest identified as needing work, then you are ready to work the word problems.

There is a lot of material in those sections that lead up to solving word problems. You should use that material to enhance your understanding of algebra. The last section on the CD is for algebra 2. You can work that after mastering the first section, or wait until you are taking Algebra 2.

Once you have taken the placement test, you should line-by-line check each of your solutions to see that the answers are correct and the steps leading to the answers are also correct. If you miss any problems, or somehow get the right answer but there were errors in getting to that answer, the section from which the problem comes is listed.

If you missed a problem from a section, you should read the section, listen to its lectures, and do the problems in the exercise set to establish the necessary foundation for working word problems.

All of the sections leading up to the sections on word problems have been specifically chosen. Those are the skills that you will be using when working word problems. If you have time, I would start with section 1 - 2 and work through all of the sections. You will be able to quickly do those sections that you already understand, and spend more time on the sections where you need to increase your understanding.

If you feel confident about a particular section, you can work just the problems whose problem numbers are in green. If you are successful with those, there is no reason to do the other problems in the exercise set. If you read the preface, you will see how the features of the material interrelate. The core (green problem numbers) problems are discussed in the preface.

22. Q: What do I get when I purchase Solving Algebra Word Problems 5.0?

A: This is basically what you get in How To Solve Algebra Word Problems 5.0

The combined run time for the video lectures are about 120 minutes.

The material is a combination of beginning and intermediate algebra. The first group of problems is from beginning algebra and the second group is from intermediate algebra. I consider beginning algebra to be first year algebra in high school. It will also contain the introduction to algebra that is generally seen in junior high. Intermediate algebra is second year high school algebra. If you are taking beginning algebra, you can work both sets of word problems, or you can work the first set of word problems and leave the second set for when you are taking intermediate algebra. Approximately 1 million college students per year take both of these classes.

There is a pretest to help you determine what areas of algebra you need to have a better understanding of before working the sections on word problems. Once you have mastered the material that the pretest identified as needing work, then you are ready to work the word problems. There is a lot of material in those sections that lead up to solving word problems. You should use that material to enhance you understanding of algebra.

Once you have taken the placement test, you should line-by-line check each of your solutions to see that the answer is correct and the steps leading to the answer are also correct. If you miss any problems, or somehow get the right answer but there were errors in getting to that answer, the section from which the problem comes is listed. If you missed any problems from a section, you should read the section, listen to its lectures, and do the problems in the exercise set to establish the necessary foundation for working word problems.

All of the sections leading up to the sections on word problems have been specifically chosen. Those are the skills that you will be using when working word problems. If you have time, I would start with section 1-2 and work through all of the sections.

There are also some extra sections on study skills for success in algebra and how to use the graphing calculator in beginning and intermediate algebra.

You can go to  TotallyFreeMath.com  and download an entire beginning algebra book for free. There is no video or audio explanations with that material, but if you just want some extra problems to work, that might be all you need. I have linked the instructor's solution manual to each of the exercise sets, so you will also get a line-by-line solution of all 6,000 problems.

23. Q: Does the GetMath HomeSchool Series include seventh grade through senior high school math (algebra through precalculus)?

A: Yes. It starts with beginning algebra, which assumes no previous exposure to algebra.

There are five chapters on arithmetic, but those are more of a review of arithmetic than covering it for the first time. The full series takes you from sixth grade through high school.

Trigonometry, College Algebra, and College Algebra with Trigonometry (precalculus) are also considered beginning courses in college.

From the website -- Arithmetic through Precalculus – With 10 textbooks to choose from, you can begin your studies of mathematics at the appropriate level. The arithmetic material contains the Metric System, ratio, proportion, percent, fractions, decimals, and signed numbers. Elements of geometry includes inductive and deductive reasoning. There are two beginning algebra and two intermediate algebra textbooks each at different skill levels. Advanced intermediate algebra leads into trigonometry followed by college algebra and precalculus.

25. Q: What are the system requirements to run your software?

A: For Beginning or Intermediate Algebra 5.0, you will need to have Adobe Reader 6.0.0 or higher. Reader 6.0.0 will run on windows 98, but I don't think it will work with Windows 95.

Solving Algebra Word Problems 5.0 will run on any version of Windows.

We include a current version of Adobe Reader on all of the discs. You will need Reader 6.0.0 for Windows 98 first edition. Please let us know if you have Windows 98 first edition, so that we include Reader 6.0.0 with the disc.  Reader 6.0.1 will be included with all discs and will run on Windows 98 second edition and newer. A copy of Windows Media Player is also included on every disc.

26. Q: Do you have any material on arithmetic?

A: In the GetMath HomeSchool Series, there are five chapters on arithmetic, but those are more of a review of arithmetic than covering it for the first time.

A good friend of mine is president of LeapFrog, and I really like their products. We may collaborate on middle and high school math. I would suggest you search through the LeapFrog website. Welcome to LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc.

Fisher Price also came out with some educational materials this year. I have not tested them, but they looked interesting. When my children were young, we had a lot of Fisher Price toys. I have always felt that they made a superior product.

Our material really starts with beginning algebra. We are the leader in the field of self-paced classes (HomeSchooling) and distance learning. Our material has video lectures on every page and all 6,000 to 7,000 problems per text are worked out step-by-step. You can see the materials at GetMath.com

Your children will benefit from our material when they begin the study of algebra. Come back and visit us at that time. We also have a free site  TotallyFreeMath.com , and you can start perusing that material. There aren’t any video lectures, but you can download for free a beginning algebra textbook, the student resource material, and the instructor resource materials. The site will eventually have 12 free textbooks and teaching materials from arithmetic through precalculus.

27. Q: I do not like ordering over the Internet. How can I purchase one of your products by sending you a money order? Can I call in my order?

A: We have had quite a few people who want one or more of our products but do not want to order online. What we have done in the past is provide a mailing address where you can send a money order for the item(s) you would like to purchase. Since we do not charge for shipping or handling, the price that is on the website is the final price.

Send us an email stating that you would like to buy something using a money order instead of ordering online. We will email you the address to which you can send a money order. We are not able to take orders over the phone.

The charge card system we use is designed for Internet purchases. It is a secure encrypted site, but we are happy to fill mail orders.

28. Q: What is an end user license agreement (EULA)?

A: When you purchase software, you are purchasing a license to use that software. As an end user, you cannot make copies, except for one backup copy, and you cannot sell the software once you have opened the package. If companies did not have EULAs, an unscrupulous person could buy the software, download it onto their computer and then sell the disc. Thereby getting the software for free.

29. Q: Can I see a copy of your end user license agreement?

A: The following is a copy of our end user license agreement –
